Glasses and keys can be easy to misplace, but when
8-foot-long glasses and 4-foot-long door keys start
vanishing, it's pretty clear something fishy's going
on. Those and other large items -- with a total value
estimated at $55,000 -- were reportedly stolen from
the set of "Dr. Seuss's Cat in the Hat," starring Mike
Myers. Police told the press they have no suspects,
though one officer commented, "We have ruled out the
Grinch." Everyone's a comedian.
The best two-word response to the comment made last
week by Andy Rooney of CBS News that women do not fit
in as sideline reporters at football games is this:
Eric Dickerson.
By the time he was 18, Jesse James was
battle-hardened and fueled by an ideological rage,
schooled in the ways of the bushwhacker by older, more
jaded colleagues like Arch Clement and Cole Younger
(whose fame for many years would rival Jesse's) to
fight "not as a victim, but as a warrior in a cause."
By the end of the war, he was living proof of Philip
Caputo's statement from "A Rumor of War" (quoted by
Stiles) that "One of the most brutal things in the
world is your average 19-year-old American boy."
Ford Field made its debut Saturday as a major concert
venue.
The review is mixed.
As a concert venue, Ford Field is a great football
stadium. Acoustics are dreadful, naturally.
The concourses are wide, the staff is courteous, there
are numerous concession stands and there are plenty of
washrooms, especially for women.

DICK CASE
POST-STANDARD COLUMNIST
"It's pretty amazing," Richard Dickinson is saying.
He's talking about the 10-pound, 51-inch-around
puffball he found growing in his back yard last week
in the 1300 block of Westmoreland Avenue near Sherman
Park.
Richard, who's pastor of Faith Evangel Church, says
he's had mushrooms sprout in the yard before, but the
crop's never been this good. Experts at the state
College of Environmental Science and Forestry looked
at his prize, took pictures and told him it's unusual.
"That's really huge," professor Chun Wang at ESF said
when I described the size on the phone Monday. "The
biggest I've ever seen was less than two feet across."
