Tim Bray may be one of the smartest people I read.
His take on backups and their philosophy is on his blog ongoing.
It is well worth your time. My personal preferences run to external drives. My fave is a seagate 100gig usb drive in a 2.5 in form factor. It has saved my life through a period when i was a OFFICIAL LAPTOP DESTROYER
Using a screwdriver I managed to void my warranty and save my ass. If you are reasonabel you can remove the hard drive from dead lappie and attach to new lappie. Wonder of wonders!!!
